ville du Canada, cap. de l'Ontario, grand port sur le lac Ontario; 635 390 hab. (aggl. urb. 3 274 200 hab.). Centre financier, comm. et industr. de la plus haute importance. Carrefour routier et ferroviaire. Trois aéroports.

— à l'emplacement de l'actuel Toronto, les Français avaient bâti un fort en 1750-1751. Les Anglais s'installèrent sur le site en 1793 et élevèrent une ville qui s'appela d'abord York et qui fut la capitale du Haut-Canada. Rebaptisée en 1834 Toronto (d'un mot amérindien signifiant "lieu de rencontre"), la cité devint la capitale de l'Ontario en 1867 et prit alors son essor.
